When Are you Allowed to Make a Contribution to a Traditional IRA?

Contributions can be made to your traditional IRA for a year at any time during the year or by the due date for filing your tax return for that year, not including extensions. For most people, this means that contributions for 2017 must be made by April 17, 2018, and contributions for 2018 must be made by April 15, 2019.

Contributions cannot be made to your traditional IRA for the year in which you reach the age of 70 and 1/2 or for any later year.

Note: Contributions can made to a Roth IRA so long as you income for the year and do not exceed the annual income limits.
